Turkey.                                                                                                                                                          We already know the turkey in Europe from the year 1520 and straight away it was a big succes. Unlike other immigrants as the potato and the tomato the turkey very fast became a popular consumption. Before the 16th century finished there where already cooking books with over twenty recepies for turkey. Maybe because the imported animal and bred animal where as big as the symbolic important peacock, that was mostly served at the tables of bigwigs and royal families, with the advantage that turkey is much more eatable. If you think that turkey is dry you should try to eat a peacock one time!

When the turkey arived in Europe nobody knew where he came from. In the lowlands (Holland and Belgium), they heard something about India so they called it kalikoets or kalkoetshoen revering to Calicut the west coast of India, kalkoetshoen became kalkoen. The French also thought of India and so they called it poule d'Inde (indian chicken) which became dinde. The English thought of Turkey and they simply called it turkey (in this time almost everything that arived in London came from Constantinopol present day Istanbul and they named everything turkish).
This makes you question how the Turkish called the turkey they also thought of India and called it Hindi. And Indians, they knew that they where not from India so how they called it? They got them from the Portuguese trhough Goa and they called them just like the Portuguese, again a other place of origin, Peru! And in Peru? There they ar called pavo as in all other Spanish speaking countrys. Before 1520 pavo ofcourse meant peacock. Peacocks ar now called pavo rea in Spanish. Italians simply (or not) gave the turkey three names tacchino, pollin or dindo. Germans called it truthuhn wich means threathening grouse because a big turkey can be pritty scary (so they basicly have the best name). Where the turkey realy comes from is Mexico and there its called guajolote, as the aztecs would call them.

                                                                   Strawberries

The garden strawberry, fragariax ananassa, is a hybrid species that is cultivated worldwide for it's fruit the common strawberry. The fruit (wich is not actually a berry, but an aggregate accessory fruit) is widely appreciated for it's charasteristic aroma.

The garden berry was first bred in Britanny, France in the 1750s via a cross of Fragaria virginiana from Eastern North America and Fragaria chiloensis, wich was brought from Chili by Amédée-Francois Frézier in 1714, funny thing is that Frézier in french means strawberry plant (fraise in French means strawberry). He was an French officer intrested in botany. And accidentaly planted his strawberry next to the one from Virginia and they crossed this was the first time they manage to cultivate a strawberry, because the American kind wouldn't mix with the European kind because of to much genetic diverences. After many attempts in the gardens of the king of France they never menage to mix two kinds of strawberry, but this time they did and this strawberry would become the plant stem of all comercial strawberries worldwide.

Potatoes.

The Irish are a people with a good sense of humour, but there were two thing to serious to joke about mariage and the potato. Because even there the mariage is going downhill only the potato stayed as a sacred object. Not strange if you know that a failed harvest in Ireland caused a mass of deaths followed by the imagration of milions of Irish to the USA.

The potato is a starchy, tuberous crop from the perinial Solanum tuberosum of the Solanaceae family better known as nightshades. In the region Andes, there are some other closely related cultivated potato species. Potatoes were first introduced outside the Andes region four centuries ago, and have become an integral part of much of the world's cuisine. It's the world fourth-largest food crop, following rice, wheat and maize.
We can find wild potato species throughout the Americas, From the United States to Uruguay. The potato was originally believed to have been domesticated indenpendently in multiple locations, but later genetic testing of the wide variety of cultivators and wild species proved a single origin for the potatoes in the area of present-day Southern Peru where they were domesticated 7000 - 10000 years ago. There are now overe a thousand types of potatoes. Of these subspicies, a variety that at one point grew in the Chiloé Archipelage (the potato's south central Chileansub-center of origin) left it germplans on over 99% of the cultivated potatoes worldwide.

Following the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire, the Spanish introduced the potato to Europe in the second half of the 16 century. the potato was slow to be adopted by distrustful European farmers, but soon enough it became an important food crop that played a mayor role in the European 19th century population boom. However lack of genetic diversity, due to the limited numbers of varieties  intoduced, left the crop vulnerable to disease resulting in the crop faileures that led to the great Irish famine.

The anual diet of a average global citizen in the first decade of the 21st century included about 33 kg of potato. It remains a very essential crop in Europe (especially eastern and central Europe and Holland). Where per capita production is still highest in the world. The Dutch ar known to be the biggest potato consumers in the world. But the most rapid expansion over the past few decades has ocurred in Eastern Asia. China is now the world's largest potato-producing country. And almost a third of the world's potatoes a produced in China and India.

 Aardappelen.

                                                                   Tomatoes

Even tough it's hard to imagine, even the Italian kitchen doesn't know recipes with tomatoes for that long. It's only been for 100 years that the Italians realy started using tomatoes, even tough they where brought by the Spanish in the 16 century after one of there many trips to South America and they already started experimented with it.They where not red but jelow and where compared with apples, golden apples (pomodori) or in French love apples (pommes d' amour). The only good tomato is a ripe (mature) tomato from a good race, only then the sweet taste is developed enough. The problem is that it become soft, so it's hard to transport and makes it dificult for business. That's the reason why we started producing red tomatoes, the tomatoes would already have a nice colour even tough they where not mature yet, unfortuanatly this is the reason why tomatoes that we buy these days in the supermarkets doesn't have much taste. If you realy wan't to eat nice tomatoes you have to grow theme yourselph or need to now where you can buy tomatoes that where cutted only when they where mature. We can find tomatoes in many colours, red, jelow, green, purple and even almost black.
